Learn How To Do Katy Perry's 'Dark Horse' Makeup

ICYMI, the video for Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" just dropped, and she is sporting some MAY-JOR eyeliner. This isn't your regular ol' cat eye, but an elaborate Eye of Horus design that ventures off of her lids. When we saw Katy's makeup in the preview last week, we were like, "That makeup is amazing, and we need to know how to do it." Fortunately, makeup artist Jake Bailey, who did Katy's makeup for the video, heard our cries and gave us the full 411 on her look. Read on for his beauty tips and how to do this Katy Patra glam yourself using COVERGIRL products!

To create this look, Jake used a black eyeliner (like COVERGIRL Bombshell Intensity Liner in Pitch Black Passion) to draw the intricate design around her eyes. "It was an adaptation of several references that I found online, but I liked this one the best," Jake said. "It was important that I use a long-lasting liner as it was a long day under hot lights, and I needed it to stay in place."

Once the liner was complete, he added some sparkle: gold liquid eye shadow in the center and inner area of Katy's lids, and purple on the outer corners. We suggest trying it with Bombshell Shine Shadows in Gold Goddess and Ooh La Lilac. Before the shadows dried completely, he tapped a bright purple and peach glitter on top for extra color and shine for the cameras.

He finished the look with a strip of false lashes and two coats of mascara. You can use COVERGIRL's Bombshell Volume Mascara—the first coat adds volume and the second adds depth with a wet looking lacquer finish.

Jake explained that when doing a makeup look with an intricate eye, especially one with glitter, he always does the eyes first. He said, "There's no point in trying to achieve a flawless complexion, cheek, and lip if you’re going to be dropping shadow and glitter all over it!" Once the eyes were finished, he buffed a thin layer of foundation (like COVERGIRL's Outlast 3-in-1 Foundation) all over her skin and neck using a flat-tipped Kabuki brush to buff it out thinly and evenly. He then mixed a touch of the gold eye shadow with an apricot cream blush on the back of his hand and blended it onto her cheeks and cheekbones for warmth and glow.

The look was finished with a bold swipe of blackberry lipstick. You can make a similar pout with COVERGIRL LipPerfection in Euphoria. Jake told us it’s one of Katy’s favorite colors, which only fuels my need to get that color on my lips ASAP.
